1. CWG 2014: Sanjita Khumukcham bags India's first gold in Glasgow
i. Sanjita Khumukcham and Mirabai Chanu Saikhom bagged a gold and silver, respectively, in women's 48kg weightlifting in a display of overwhelming domination to open India's medal account on the opening day of the competition in the 20th Commonwealth Games on Thursday.
ii. Sanjita won with a total lift of 173kg (77+96) while Mirabai grabbed the silver with a cumulative effort of 170 (75+95) in the absence of other strong competitors.
iii. Nigerai's Nkechi Opara was a distant third with 162 (70+92).
iv. Sanjita's total of 173kg missed the Games record, held the name of 2010 CWG gold winner Augustina Nkem Nwaokolo (175kg effort) by two kilograms. Sanjita's 77kg effort in snatch however equalled Nwaokolo's Commonwealth Games record.
2. CWG: India off to fine start; Medal tally at 2 gold, 3 Silver & 2 Bronze
i. India had fine start on day one of the 20th Commonwealth Games. India bagged 2 Gold 3 Silver and 2 Bronze yesterday.
ii. Today India is participating in 12 events: Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Hockey, Judo, Lawn ball,Rhytmic Gymnastics, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting.
iii. In shooting, India's former Olympic Gold Medallist Abhinav Bindra have qualified for finals of 10m Air Rifle event along with Ravi Kumar. Bindra stood third in qualification with Kumar following him. This is Abhinav Bindra's last Commonwealth Games appearance. Earlier, today former world number one Heena Sidhu and Malaika Goel qualified for the finals in Women's 10m Air pistol event. Sidhu qualified with highest point of 383 and Goel stood fourth with 378 points.
iv. Indian Men's Hockey team have started their campaign with 1-3 victory over Wales in it's opening preliminary match. For India Gurwinder Chandi, Rupinder Singh and Raghunath Ramachandra found net. The lone goal came from Welsh was scored by Andrew Cornick.
3. India clinches two gold medals in weightlifting
i. India ran away with opening day honours in the weightlifting competition of the 20th Commonwealth Games with Sukhen Dey and K. Sanjita Chanu winning the gold medal in their respective events on Thursday.
ii. The Indian team bagged four out of six medals on offer on day one of the competition on Thursday.
iii. Sanjita and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu opened India’s campaign on a flying note by winning a gold and silver respectively in women’s 48kg before Dey and Ganesh Mali bagged with first and third position in men’s 56kg to cap a remarkable day for the Indians at the Clyde Auditorium.
iv. The 25-year-old Dey lifted a total of 248kg (109+139) after trailing at the halfway snatch stage, but came back strongly in clean and jerk to win the gold. He had also won a silver in the 2010 Delhi CWG besides bagging a gold in the 2013 Commonwealth Championships in November last year.
4. Ukraine's PM resigns, complicating MH17 probe
i. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has resigned after his governing coalition collapsed, plunging the former Soviet state into political limbo as it struggles to quell a deadly rebellion in the east.
ii. The shock announcement made yesterday added to an already chaotic situation in the rebel-controlled east, where international experts are carrying out a complex investigation into last week’s downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 that left 298 dead.
iii. Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said he was stepping down over the “dissolution of the parliamentary coalition and the blocking of government initiatives” after several parties walked out on the ruling group.
iv. The collapse of the ruling coalition paves the way for early elections to be called by President Petro Poroshenko within 30 days.
5. BJP leader Balram Das Tandon is new Chhattisgarh Governor
i. Senior BJP leader Balram Das Tandon was sworn-in as the fifth Governor of Chhattisgarh at a ceremony held at Raj Bhawan in Raipur today.
ii. Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court, Yatindra Singh administered the oath of office to 87- year old Tandon.
iii. The swearing in ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Raman Singh, his Cabinet colleagues, opposition leaders, top civil and police officials.
6. Salman Khan is brand ambassador for pipes maker Astral
i. Bollywood star Salman Khan has been appointed brand ambassador for plumbing pipe major Astral Poly Technik Ltd.
ii. The association with the Bollywood star will be valid for two years
